Success in Style
Success in Style (SIS) helps disadvantaged men and women find employment and self-sufficiency by providing them with interview appropriate attire and coaching. To support this work, they operate two retail/donation centers: Historic Savage Mill in Savage, MD, and is open Tuesday-Saturday 10-6, and Sunday 11-6. Glen Burnie Mall is open 11 - 6 Tuesday - Saturday and 12 - 4 Sunday. They offer flexible scheduling so that volunteers can sign up for as many or as few hours as their schedule permits. High school students, 14 and older are welcome.
Teen volunteers are needed in their fashion thrift boutiques, Charity & Phil Closet and Cherie Amour (a bridal resale shop - only in Savage), to sort, hang, and tag clothing, and sometimes assist customers with purchases. Everything in their upscale resale boutique is $5 and they feature name-brand items. SIS provides training for all volunteers. The work is fun and very rewarding.

Historic Annapolis
Since 1952 Historic Annapolis has preserved the distinctive character of Maryland's capital city through public advocacy and guidelines, purchase and renovation, original research and educational programs. Historic Annapolis manages the William Paca House and Garden, Shiplap House, Museum Store, the 99 Main Street Historic Annapolis Museum, and 43 Pinkney Street, the Hogshead Living History site.
Historic Annapolis is looking for volunteers to greet visitors, monitor visitor activity, and provide Annapolis historical information and historic context for exhibits at the Historic Annapolis Museum, located at City Dock. Volunteers are needed on Saturdays and Sundays in two shifts, 10-2 and 2-6. Historic Annapolis is looking for a minimum commitment of two shifts per month (8 hours). Volunteers may be as young as 14 if accompanied by an adult volunteer or at least 16 to volunteer by themselves. The museum is climate controlled and business casual attire is required. Orientation and mentoring will be provided. The volunteer opportunities are year round.

Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)
The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) is a national research center focused on the critical environmental challenges facing our planet in the 21st century. Located on nearly 3,000 acres of land on the Rhode River on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay, SERC scientists investigate our changing world by studying issues of global importance including sea level rise, climate change, endangered plants, exploited fisheries, and water quality. Through our citizen science program, members of the public can actively participate in our novel scientific research, gaining hands-on experience and allowing scientists to address questions that could not otherwise be answered.
We currently have two ongoing citizen science projects (see details below) as well as numerous short-term (half-day to one week in duration) projects. To learn more about any of these opportunities, please contact Alison Cawood (, 443-482-2271).
1) BiodiveriTREE
Last year, volunteers helped us plant approximately 20,000 trees to create an experimental forest that will be followed and studied for the next 100 years in an effort to better understand biodiversity in temperate forests. Now, we need volunteers to help us monitor the trees and maintain our forest. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to participate on their own (parent/guardian signature is required) and we will consider volunteers as young as 13 who would be working alongside a parent/guardian on a case by case basis. Looking forward, we will be looking for individuals, families, and groups to “adopt” plots and be responsible for plot maintenance and data collection (things like soil samples and tree measurements).
2) Environmental Archaeology
The SERC Archaeology Lab is looking for volunteers to help excavate 17th and 18th century house sites. Volunteers work with scientists and students to excavate sites, preserve artifacts, and collect environmental data to understand the ways that people have change the land (or not) over the past 200 years. Volunteers can participate on Wednesdays from 9AM to 3PM on the SERC Campus in Edgewater, MD. Occasional Saturday opportunities are available. No prior knowledge is required and all training will be provided. Volunteers may be working outside and some bending and kneeling is required. We will consider volunteers under the age of 18 on a case by case basis. Any volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
