HOSPICE OF THE CHESAPEAKE -- FOUR-WHEEL DRIVERS

"Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the potential to turn a life around." -Leo Buscaglia.

At Hospice of the Chesapeake, our overarching mission is to care for life throughout the journey with illness and loss by providing physical, psycho-social, and spiritual support services to individuals living with and affected by advanced illness. As a fully licensed, community-based non-profit organization, we provide services to those in need at the place that they call home - regardless of their age or ability to pay.  An integral component of this team-oriented, holistic approach is our Hospice Volunteer Team, who consistently serves above and beyond to support our hospice patients and their families.  Hospice Volunteers are one of the few who can make a true difference in someone’s life by offering a small portion of their time, energy, and skills. We are always on the lookout for such dedicated, compassionate individuals to join our dynamic Volunteer Team.

A life-limiting illness never takes a sick day or has off for the holiday.  If/when inclement weather arrives, our interdisciplinary team must still find a way to visit our patients of most need.  While businesses and schools in the county may be closed, our wonderful Hospice Team, including our dedicated volunteers, are out in the county providing the upmost quality of care to our patients and their families. During times of inclement weather, our willing teams of volunteers with four-wheel drive are called upon to transport our nurses and other medical staff to the homes of our hospice patients who are in immediate need of care.

The average time commitment for this role is dependent upon the needs of such services and the individual availability of the volunteer.  We require all of our volunteer drivers to possess a current valid driver’s license, evidence of a driving record in good standing, and proof of automobile liability insurance. **PLEASE NOTE – The safety of or patients, staff, and volunteers are of the upmost importance.  We would never place our volunteers or staff in danger in extreme inclement weather – and in such a situation would call emergency services to visit those patients who are in urgent need**

Hospice of the Chesapeake is grateful for the support volunteers provide to our hospice patients and their families. Among many other benefits and opportunities, we provide all of our volunteers with hospice, palliative care, and end-of-life education, patient care trainings, and continuous opportunities for educational in-services.
